How to convert kW to hp
How to convert your Kw to Hp to determine your motor power?
When you want to order or replace an electric motor or a gearmotor, the power is generally expressed in kW (Kilowatt) and sometimes in Hp, but how do you convert your Kw to Hp? We explain everything.
Power is the main characteristic we ask our customers for when replacing a faulty electric motor. However, power is expressed in 2 different ways: in Kw or Hp.
- Hp (Horsepower) is a unit of power that has been used for many years for internal combustion engines and electric motors. It refers to the power of an engine.
- Kw (Kilowatt) is a unit of electrical power, it corresponds to 1000 Watts. This unit is the most commonly used on the nameplates of electric motors.
The calculation method is simple, we explain how to convert your Kw to Hp
To calculate the power of a Kw in horsepower for your electric motor, the calculation method is very simple. You just need to multiply your power in Kw by 1.36.
Example:
For a 0.75 Kw electric motor:
0.75Kw * 1.36 = 1.02 Hp, which is a power of one horsepower (1Hp).
132kw x 1.36 = 179.52 Hp, which is a power of 180 Kw
Now that you know how to convert Kw to Hp, we will explain how to convert Watts to Horsepower.
We now know that one Kw is equal to 1000 Watts. So to convert the power of your W to Hp, you need to divide the power in Watts by 1000 and multiply it by 1.36.
Example:
You have a 4kw electric motor, which is 4000W. The calculation method is as follows:
4000 / 1000 x 1.36 = 5.44 Hp, or 5.5 Kw
